 Stress

What is Stress?

'Stress' is the term that is used when referring to any situation or issue that creates the feeling of distress, discomfort for an individual, also making them feel overwhelmed.

Common sources of stress for students:

  • Exams or tests

  • Deadlines

  • Poor time management

  • Having difficulty to organise their work and priorities

  • Procrastination

These stress sources are not inevitable however it is best to understand the sources (maybe other ones than the ones above) but it is important to know so that you can be supportive

Not being able to have a healthy balance in their academic lifestyle (or also not having a balance between both their social and academic life) can be highly stressful of course, as explained before, whether the child portrays and optimistic or pessimistic view on these stressful situations, navigates their next approach as so how they deal with the issues. As a student I understand that there will be sources of stress at school and you can’t necessarily avoid them however by assuring that you have support systems can really help the student work through the challenges. By knowing the sources and what can occur, the teachers can then use specific tasks or exercises which can help with the student’s positivity and reflective skills which can slowly, assist with their coping mechanisms.

If for a longer time period, the students continue to feel overwhelmed or stressed out, they can easily start to ‘shut off’ from their environment which also triggers their negative thoughts. With lack of support, it is another way that could lead to depression.
